MINIMUM WAGE IMMINENCE UNIT
Mimimum Wage Imminence Unit are an improvising trio from Manchester consisting of Dave Birchall (electric guitar), Michael Perrett (bass clarinet) and Adam Fairhall (accordion).
The trio capitalise on their unusual instrumentation to create a haunting, immersive soundworld. A sense of drone underlies much of their music, from which emerges rich timbres, flashes of complex harmony and hints of folk and jazz. Stylistic touchstones include drone music, spectral composition and free improvisation.
Pieces develop via an intuitive group understanding of shape, gained over several years of playing together in the abandoned Edwardian school in Gorton where Dave had his workshop. The trio often favour a gradually unfurling sense of forward movement, in which surprise turns and unexpected moments are given room to breath.
